Leaders and Misleaders: A Journey into Effective Leadership

Leaders and Misleaders: A Journey into Effective Leadership

Leadership is that lodestar upon which success and morale hinge in all forms of dynamic work environments. "Leaders and Misleaders: The Fine Line Between Great and Terrible Bosses" is a book born of an in-depth understanding of just this truth. It will take readers on a journey into the essential qualities that separate outstanding leaders from those who simply cannot inspire and offer actionable insights with real-life examples to put readers on the path toward true leadership.

The Purpose of the Book

Why discuss the difference between great and terrible bosses? It is simply that leadership impacts every other aspect of the workplace. A good boss will make any Bucket job into a fulfilling career by creating an atmosphere of learning, teamwork, and innovation. On the other hand, a bad boss smothers creativity, breeds resentment, and sends talented people fleeing. The purpose of this book is to shed light upon such contrasting realities and to arm its readers with knowledge and tools so that they are better placed and equipped to not only identify but also personify some of the hallmarks of outstanding leadership.

Personal Inspiration

The "Leaders and Misleaders" has been inspired by my personal and professional journey. Having gone through several leadership roles, myself, I have seen both ends of the spectrum: leaders who built up and empowered their teams, and those whose actions created toxic work environments. These were experiences that shaped my understanding of what it takes to be an effective leader and helped fuel my passion for sharing these insights with others. I tried to make it more relatable and engaging by drawing from everyday examples and personal anecdotes. This helps the narrative resonate in various dimensions with readers coming from all walks of life.

What readers can expect:

In "Leaders and Misleaders," the ins and outs of leadership are explored. The structure of the book makes it suitable for reading through a wide array of topics, hence giving an all-round understanding of the ingredients that contribute to a great leader. Leadership Functions

In the last blog I tried to juxtapose the various definition given to the word leadership. In this blog I’m going to build on that as promised.
Also in this blog we are going to be answering some pertinent questions as regards the subject of
leadership. I won’t be surprised if my last blog generated a lot of tensions or raised a lot of questions at the least. Thus this blog will answer some questions as well as build on where we stopped the last
time. Without much ado, let’s get right to it.

Let me refresh your mind on what we discussed the last time. We were able to look at two of the functions of a leader. We were able to look at his ability to rule and inspires. That is his ability to rule himself that is, distinguish himself in all aspect of his personal life. In integrity and in honesty. Let me cite an example. As a principle, he never break an appointment and a promise. He never goes late for an appointment because he rules himself and not others. Thus this quality puts him in position where he is able to inspire others where ‘others’ refers to people who consciously become his
protegee. Well that being said, lets look at the third definition of a leader.

Another function of a leader is to guide. What then does it mean to guide? I’m interested in this definition: to accompany somebody somewhere to show them the way. Note the word ‘accompany’, which means to be a companion to somebody. Are you getting this? He does not stay aloof and say hey! Why on earth have you not done thine done that? He is actually in the same shoe as the person in question. Guiding him through every step of the way. He guides- that must infer that he knows where the other person is going and identifies with his choices, drives, beliefs and inclinations. He knows how to turn a bad decision around for the good of the other person (please note the use of “the other person”). He does not judge or criticize his choices neither does he second guess his decisions and beliefs. He seeks to understand the other person’s reason for acting this way or that way and seek guide such that he does end up wrecking himself. In short he shows die hard empathy.

It is important however to note that a leader must embark on a self discovery journey. He  must be trained in the art of leadership. Oops, did i just say art? Yes i said it. Leadership is an art, it can be learned and hence thought. It Stephen R covey who says that leadership is by choice. I agree with him a 110%. A choice to be a leader is a choice to commit to a leader and a choice to commit to learning. A wise man counseled that we should a learner for living. A man looking to go into leadership must
endeavor to commit himself to learning. You know why? Experience can not be divorced from exceptional leadership. Hmm, i hear some people say that training is superior to experience. Well i agree
only in part. You know why? Experience in itself is training. A true man of experience is a man
trained in the university of life otherwise known as the university of hard knocks where he passed all his exams. Let me state here for a fact that a man does not necessarily permit his protegee  to go through what he passed through but he offers his guidance based on what he went through. A
good leader sees the pitfall before a man under his training falls therein.

I made a promise in the last blog which i can not but fulfil. But before i do that i really must tell you guys this  as it is very noteworthy. Now out of three functions of a leader highlighted in my blog here, do you know that two out of the three are for intending trainees (in really don’t like the word follower, please pardon me). While one of the functions is to him and him alone. That is he must rule- distinguish himself and this function must be carried out first before he is actually discovered by intending trainees. Until he rules, he won’t be able to inspire and guide well. Now to the question: how do i inspire others? Let’s  look at the definition of the word again. It means to serve as the inciting cause of something. Remember i coined the word “contagious leadership” in the last post? Well that’s about it. The actions or conducts of a leader must be such that they inspire people to act the way they are acting. A leader should act or do what he wants to see the other person doing. For instance if i want the other person to cultivate the habit of reading then  he must that he is an addict reader himself. I believe with time the trainee will see that habit and pick it up unconsciously without being cajoled into doing such.
So until next time, Shalom

What Leadership is

My major interest for this blog is the word leader and leadership. A leader is described as "A person who rules, guides and inspires others". Let's take a look at each action words one after the other. Thus, what does it mean to rule? To rule simply means to 'exercise authority over; as of nations'. We're still going to look into this definition later. The next action word is the word 'guide'., which means to be a guiding or motivating force or drive. Lastly, let's define the word 'inspires". Out of the numerous definitions of the word, I will focus on one.  It says to serve as the inciting cause of. We will revisit these definitions later as we proceed.

Now let's take a look at the word leadership. It is easy to say that leadership is the art of leading but I'm, looking for a deeper meaning of the word. I will be discussing leadership as the ability to lead here and equally discuss leadership as the activity of leading- hmm that is looking at leadership beyond the status of a leader and actually see it as a state of doing the 'leading'. Now let me pop the questions: is leadership an innate ability? Is it learned or imparted? Or is it consciously developed? We will consider these questions one after the other as we proceed. It is important to note that leadership is not defined by status or title but by function. We need to make that clear. We will discuss this further I a while.

We discussed earlier that a leader that a leader carries out a three-fold functions thus, he rules, guides and inspires note this word 'others' meaning people. i believe it is safe to say that until a man carries out this three fold functions, he is a leader by status and not by function.  We need to get this word right. to rule means to distinguish oneself. I think I can get your attention now. Please note that I defined the word 'rule' only in this context. the kind of leadership that works is the kind that leads by what I called 'controlled actions'. it is so called because it is carried out with an intention. such actions is intended for a particular result. i believe  leadership is such that the actions of the leader alone speaks louder than the voice. We need to get to a place where we act or do what we want to see in the other person. and I don't mean all this rote learning-kind of leadership where the led is expected to do as the leader- it is short-sighted, short-lived and counter productive. I'm a believer in 'contagious leadership'.

I need to be clearer on some points I made earlier. Doing what I want to see in the other person has to first of all be part of my life as a person otherwise it is a mere manipulation and bewitchment at its core. I'm not acting this way or that way to get in shape but I act this way or that way because it is my way if life. it has  become that part of me that can not taken away from me. Does it now mean I only permit who can comply to my own way of life around me? Certainly not as that will be a grave leadership error. The goal here is not to make people conform to your way of life. gosh you can't take away their will power and individuality. this brings us to the next leadership function.

Why do I need to distinguish myself? That is why do I need to rule myself?  I do that so I can inspire others. then how do I inspire others and not manipulate them? I will discuss this question in my next blog. Hm, I'm interested in this definition. It say to serve as the inciting cause of..... you can fill in  the blanks yourself. This means the other person chooses to be inspired by you. Not that you put a label on your chest saying 'want some inspiration? give me a call' no not at all. It means people choose to come around because your way of life attracts or endears them to you. It means they consciously walk up to you and say hey! I've got some inspiration. My next blog will discuss the last function of a leader and treat the question I asked. Shalom
